Saint Prophet Jeremiah is a Christian saint and an Old Testament prophet. He was born around the year 600 BC in the village of Anathoth not far from Jerusalem. He began to prophesy in his 15th year during the reign of Emperor Josiah. He was persecuted, for he has prophesied many misfortunes to the emperors and nobles because of their faith in false idols and sacrificing children to these idols. King Joachimus prophesied that his body would be dragged out of the city walls of Jerusalem, and the next to Emperor Jehoni, that he would be taken to Babylon with his whole family and die there. When the throne in Jerusalem came to king Zedekiah, Jeremiah foretold the fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity. In the valley of Totef under Jerusalem, where the children were sacrificed to idols, he predicted the imminent fall of the Judean Empire. Soon it became true. Some Jews took him to Misir, where he prophesied the destruction of the mischievous idols and the coming of Virgin with the newborn. There, in Egypt, the Jews stoned St. Jeremiah, where he was buried. According to legend, the emperor Alexander the Great visited the tomb of the prophet Jeremiah and under his command Jeremiah's body was transferred to Alexandria.
It is believed that Jeremiah is protector of poisonous snakes.
