The apostle Matthew (the ancient Hebrew Matthias, the gift of Yahweh, corresponds to the Serbian name Bozidar) is one of the twelve apostles. Before his baptism, he was called Levi.
He was a Jew, in the service of the Romans as a customs officer in Capernaum. At that time the customs officer was what the taxman is today. He levied taxes in the leased area, so the customs officer (bailiff) tried to collect as much tax as possible so that he could have as much left as possible.
According to Scripture, when Jesus Christ called him to be a disciple (apostle), he left everything and followed Him, receiving the Holy Spirit, Matthew preached the Gospel in Partia, Midia, and Ethiopia. In Ethiopia he was executed by a prince whose wife and son he had baptized, but after repenting after taking the lead suitcase with the body of the apostle Matthew from the sea, the prince himself was baptized and received the name Matthew. After the death of Bishop Plato, whom Matthew the Apostle had appointed, Matthew (after the dream in which the Apostle Matthew appeared to him) became a new bishop in Ethiopia.
According to legend, St. The apostle Matthew wrote (in the order in Scripture of the New Testament) the first gospel, the Holy Gospel of Matthew, and is also called the Gospel Matthew.
The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates the Holy Evangelist and Apostle Matthew on November 29th.
