Saint Sava was the Serbian prince, monk, abbot of the monastery Studenica, writer, diplomat and the first archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church. He was born as Rastko Nemanjic, the youngest son of the great mayor Stefan Nemanja, and brother Vukan and Stefan Prvovencani. As a young man he received from his father administration of Zahumlje. Soon Rastko escaped to the Sveta Gora (Holy Mountain) and settled down in the Russian monastery of St. Panteleimon, where he got the name Sava. Later, with his father, who became a monk and named Simeon raised Chilandar, the first and only Serbian monastery on Mount Athos.
Sava left more written works and was therefore one of the most important writers and lawyers from the Middle Ages. By educating future servants of the Church of Christ, he gained a lot of credit for the development of schooling and education of the Serbs in the Middle Ages. In Serbia and the Republic of Srpska, the day of his death (January 27, according to the new calendar) is marked as Day of Education.
