Introduction is one of the five great Mother of God holidays. It signifies the entry (introduction) of the Holy Virgin into the temple. It celebrates November 21st.
Mary, as a three-year-old child, was in keeping with the covenant of her parents, Joachim and Anna, that if they were given birth, the child would be delivered to God at the temple, brought from Nazareth to Jerusalem. Mary's entry into the temple was followed by a solemn procession of Joakim's and Anna's relatives. She stayed there for nine years.
This holiday in our nation is also called the Holy Pure or Female Virgin, and is considered a women's holiday. It is especially celebrated by childbirths and women who cannot give birth, so that the Virgin may protect their children and give them birth.
