John is called the Baptist because, according to religious teaching, he baptized Jesus Christ, and the Forerunner because he announced the coming of Christ.
He baptized anyone who repented in the Jordan River. He lived simply and ascetically, feeding on insects and honey of wild bees, and dressed in a dress made of camel hair.
John was killed during the reign of King Herod of Judea, who ordered the prophet to be beheaded.
There is a custom among the people for people to be brothers and godparents on St. John's Day, because John is considered a model of character and honesty.
Believers, whether Orthodox or Catholic, very often give John's name to their children. Orthodox celebrate the baptism of St. John, and Catholics usually celebrate the name day.
