"... I found a wonderful place from time immemorial, the great White City, which was destroyed, and I built it and dedicated it to the Blessed Virgin."
At the beginning of the 15th century, despot Stefan Lazarevic began by then the most comprehensive construction of Belgrade. The city itself had seven large towers, Despot's castle, churches, parks, shelters for the sick, docks for boats. Belgrade had four large gates. One of them is Despot's Gate with one of the towers. There was a massive drawbridge in front of the gate. Unfortunately, during the bombing during the Austro-Turkish war at the end of the seventeenth century, an ammunition depot was hit and almost all of the city disappeared. Despot's gate with, later called the Dizdar Tower, as well as the northeast rampart, is the most preserved of it.
The model of the city was placed just below the bank called by the Turks "Fitzir Bayr" which means "thinking hill". On the same bank, after the battle of 1521, Suleiman the Magnificent sat, reflecting on the beauty of the city he conquered.
