The monument was erected in 1882 in honor of Prince Mihailo M. Obrenovic III. It was made by the famous Italian sculptor Enriko Paci.
Due to his circumstances and his diplomatic skills, Prince Mihailo managed to take over the remaining cities (whose names are on the monument) from Turkey, as well as to make sure that the last Turkish soldier leaves Serbia. On April 6, 1867, the prince, on a white horse, received as a gift from the Sultan, rode into the Belgrade fortress through the Stambol Gate, where the Sultan's decree was read and the keys to the city were handed over to him. The monument symbolizes just that moment. Whether incidentally or not, the prince's hand is directed toward Jericho, as the place where the trumpets celebrated faith and perseverance. Belief and perseverance made Belgrade become and remain Serbian again.
