The Belgrade fortress has been built and demolished over many centuries by many, including the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Serbia, with enormous casualties, victoriously ended the wars against both empires. It was these circumstances that determined the fortress for the site where the Victor monument would be erected. In the most beautiful place in the city, above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, it represents a new era, an era of freedom for the Serbian people. Vigilance and courage is embodied in a warrior with a falcon in one hand and a sword in the other. Originally conceived elsewhere, the monument became part of a Belgrade fortress by a combination of circumstances. Obviously this was love at first sight, since since 1928, when "The Winner" was solemnly revealed, it is impossible to imagine them separate. The monument was erected to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki Front and Serbia's victory in the wars from 1912 to 1918. It is the work of sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962).
