Hilandar, in older scriptures, and Hilendar (Greek Χιλανδαρίου) is a Serbian monastery located in the northern part of Mount Athos (Greek Aγιoν Oρoς), a state of Orthodox monks that has existed for over a thousand years.
The Hilandar Monastery was rebuilt by Stefan Nemanja (in the monastery Simeon) and his son Sava in 1198, and in 1199 Stefan Nemanja died in the monastery. In 1262 King Stefan Uros I established the monastery significantly. Hilandar was especially aided by King Milutin, who built the new Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in about 1320 in the place of the old one. During the time of King and Emperor Dusan, the Holy Mountain came under his rule, which is the period of the greatest prosperity of the monastery.
Hilandar is one of the most important centers of Serbian culture and spirituality. For centuries, relatively protected from attack and plunder, in the safety of Mount Athos and its autonomy, it was spared the fate that afflicted almost all other Serbian monasteries. In Hilandar, the richest collection of original old manuscripts, icons, murals is preserved, so that today it represents the most significant treasury of Serbian medieval culture in general.
