Northeast of Belgrade, in the south of Banat, does not stand, but is constantly expanding, the city of Pančevo. It has over 80,000 inhabitants, and the name of the city is mentioned even in the nineteenth century.
In the sixteenth century, Pančevo belonged to Turkey, but by the beginning of the eighteenth century it was entered into the arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which contributed to becoming a beautiful, urbanized city.
It became an important place in the Military Border and a defense line from the Turkish Empire. Since then, in the old town of Pančevo, there have been members of various nations, but most of them were Serbs, Germans and Hungarians.
In addition to them, there were also Romanians, Jews, Cincar, Slovaks and Greeks. Even the Russian nobility and intelligence arrived, fleeing from the "Reds" during the October Revolution.
The city became a craft, trade and cultural center in which various cultures intertwined. It was economically strengthening and progressing, and in the nineteenth century, the average Pancevac was a gentleman, trader or craftsman, spoke three languages: Serbian, German and Hungarian, dressed in European fashion and had a rich cultural life. Balloons, concerts and theater performances were held. He traveled by rail and steamboat.
