In the area of the present-day city on the Benaean meanders, life began in prehistoric times. The city was first mentioned as a settlement in the first half of the XIV century, 1326, under the name of Beckerek. This name carries six centuries with different variants of pronunciation, depending on who ruled this region.
From the small, rural habitat, the development of crafts and trade, the city became a city in the middle of the 18th century. Since then, the heart of Central Europe and the world has been beaten in the heart of Vienna. The city is not only a synonym for agricultural affairs and activities, but also other institutions are established, newspapers are printed in several languages, education, culture and arts are being developed. In 1935, the city was named after Petrovgrad, by King Petar I Karađorđević. Today's name Zrenjanin gets after the Second World War, according to the national hero Zarko Zrenjanin.
This is a place where roads and caravans, harvest and fires, armies and churches have been crossed through history. The place where many peoples, who may have stopped to sneeze in their path, but who often stayed, bound to this fertile plain, have met in various seances and colonizations to this day.
This is shown by the fact that in today's territory of the municipality of Zrenjanin, there are more than 20 national entities, the most numerous of which are Serbs, and of national minorities Hungarians, Romanians, Slovaks, Bulgarians, Rusins and others.
