      PERUN, THE THUNDERMAN
PERUN, one of the sons of the Svarogs, as our ancestors called him, "mighty among the gods and ruler over men."
He is the one who rules the heavens and the heavenly lightning, the protector of warriors, who presides over the Truth, the world of the gods. His power is immeasurable, even though Svarog is the supreme progenitor of the gods, all his power is manifested in Perun. The wrathful god is also known as a destroyer with great power. It represents eternal and infallible justice, it brings fear to evil forces as well as evil people. Our ancestors swore to Perun and made vows in his name. After accepting Christianity, the attributes of Perun as thunderbolt and strict heavenly justice were taken over by St. Elijah, popularly known as St. Ilija Gromovnik. He is the protector of rulers, princes, despots and the patron of power, which ruler rules his people well, he is at the mercy of Perun.
Warriors proudly wore his symbols in the form of an iris or an axe, believing that it protected them from enemy intentions and evil fate. His symbol, the iris flower, is still ritually placed on the rafters and doorposts of newly completed houses, our ancestors believed that this was to let Perun know that he was respected in that home, and that he would be in mercy and protect him from lightning strikes and other weather problems. Warriors engraved the iris sign on their axes, believing that this gave the ax miraculous powers and that there was no defense against its blow.
